SCMA Show Manager, Terry Tjaden, Announces Retirement

Orange, CA:    Terry Tjaden, 23-year Show Manager for the Southern California Marine Association, announced plans to retire from the marine industry effective June 30.  "I have countless things to be thankful for, especially the many dear friends that I have made during my career," commented Tjaden when he officially broke the news during the May 18 SCMA Board of Directors meeting.  "The boating business has been my life for nearly forty years and it has been a rewarding and enriching experience.  I take with me a lot of priceless memories that I will cherish always."  Tjaden continued, "I hope that I have contributed in some small way to the betterment of the recreational boating industry and the SCMA.  I've genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with manufacturers, dealers and reps, assisting them develop and grow their businesses to become more successful in this industry.  In the end, it's all about the people."
SCMA Executive Director, Dave Geoffroy, said, "Terry is a unique and very special kind of person.  He has the patience of Job and a rare talent for connecting on a personal level with people he does business with.  I've been in the marine industry for a very long time, and without question, there's no better boat show manager in this business.  While we'll miss his knowledge, insight and flawless work ethic greatly, his retirement is truly well deserved."
Tjaden began his boating industry career in 1971 as a regional sales rep for Mercury Marine.  He joined the SCMA in the capacity as Show Manager in December 1986.  In 2007, at the SCMA's annual Christmas holiday celebration, Tjaden was presented with the association's highest honor, the lifetime achievement award.
Tjaden's announced retirement coincides with his wife Gina's recent retirement as Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Library at Mt. San Antonio Community College where she served for 19 years.
"We're both looking forward to relocating to Bend, Oregon in early summer," said Tjaden.  "Since our two married daughters, Heather and Allison, and twelve grandchildren live at opposite ends of the earth, the opportunity for travel is greatly improved.  Allison and husband David are doing God's work for Living Room Ministries International in Kenya, Africa, while Heather and husband Scott minister in Tega Cay, South Carolina."
Geoffroy informed the SCMA Board of Directors that Tjaden has agreed to be available on an as-needed basis in a consulting capacity.  "Terry's departure from SCMA definitely leaves a void, but we've been preparing for this eventuality," said Geoffroy.  "With a window for transition and a reassignment of strategic internal responsibilities, no immediate SCMA staff changes are contemplated at this time."

Coast Guard Auxiliary Establishes New Float Plan

03 June 2010: The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary announced today its new 2010 float plan that offers unprecedented flexibility and ease of use.

The new float plan allows users of Adobe Reader version 8 or later to save any data they enter into the float plan on their computer for later revision or use. Users now only need to enter information about their vessel one time. Data related to specific trips can be added or changed as necessary. “The ability to save data and e-mail a completed float plan to a friend or relative is a huge convenience for the recreational boater,” says Public Affairs Web Branch Chief Vern Jansky. “It was the most requested feature, and we’re very pleased to be able to offer it in this update.”

The update also includes new data fields, additional user-defined fields, and new drop-down lists that show all of the available choices for greater ease of use. The “vessel type” field has been expanded, offering a broader range of recreational vessels to choose from. The “itinerary” section has been enhanced to improve readability. Also, each field on the plan has an explanatory “tip” that is displayed when the user hovers over the field, providing specific guidance on the type of data that should be entered.

In accordance with the 2010 DHS Appropriations Act, the U.S. Coast Guard terminated the transmission of all U.S. LORAN-C signals on 08 Feb 2010. Additionally, the International Cospas-Sarsat System ceased satellite processing of 121.5/243 MHz beacons on 1 February 2009.  Although Emergency Locator Transmitters used by aircraft may still be used, alerts from these devices or from 121.5/243 MHz EPIRBs will no longer be acted upon unless detected by an over flying aircraft. The 2010 float plan update reflects these changes with the elimination of LORAN C and EPIRB Class A, B, C, S, and Inmarsat E options.

Availability

The updated float plan will be available 21 May 2010 worldwide on the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s Float Plan Central website: www.floatplancentral.org.

Prevention: Maintain Your Boat’s Fuel System

Los Angeles, Calif….. Spring has officially arrived and most boaters have started the process of Dewinterizing their boats. The most overlooked item is the fuel system. Since your boat has been sitting all winter, it is imperative to clean and maintain your fuel system prior to running the motor. Clean fuel is essential to ensure your boat is always running at its peak performance.

Pour a small amount of fuel into a glass jar and let it set for a while. If you see contaminants or dirt settle at the bottom of the jar make sure to filter your gas prior to putting it in your boat motor. Approximately 90% of engine problems can be directly attributed to dirty, contaminated fuel.

A small amount of water in gasoline will not damage the motor. But any amount of water in diesel fuel could spell catastrophe and destroy your engine.

A few things to remember:

  1. Check for contaminated fuel
  2. Check fuel cap for leaks
  3. Check vent fittings
  4. If fuel is dirty, remove all of it and start over with clean fuel
  5. Maintaining boat fuel systems will save money on costly repairs
  6. The last thing you want is to be stranded without a motor working

Know Your Boat’s Capacity

Los Angeles, Calif. …. A boat operator should never take a boat on the water with too many people or too much gear on board. Boats loaded beyond their capacity will swamp or capsize more easily and will be more difficult to control. Although federal law requires capacity plates on boats fewer than 20 feet in length, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) requires a capacity plate on all boats fewer than 26 feet in order to be certified by NMMA.

Look for a capacity plate near the operator’s position or on the transom of the boat. This plate indicates the maximum weight capacity and/or the maximum number of people that the boat can carry safely in good weather.

A few things to remember:

  1. Do not exceed either the stated maximum weight capacity or number of people
  2. Maximum weight is the combined weight of passengers, gear & motor.
  3. In many states it is a violation to exceed weight capacity
  4. Always follow the recommended capacity in the owner’s manual
  5. Never exceed capacity recommendations.
