SCMA actively supports higher education. In order to help ease the
burden of escalating education costs for deserving students attending universities, technical institutes or community colleges, SCMA has
established its own Scholarship Fund which awards
cash scholarships annually to children under the age of
21 of regular SCMA members. Applicants need only be full-time
students, or have plans to become one in the future to be considered.
A panel of impartial educators evaluate the submissions and
select the eventual winners.
The challenge of graduating from high school and being admitted to a college or university is indeed a daunting task for many teenagers. For Keven Holliday, this year's winner of SCMA's $2,500 scholarship award, it was even tougher. In Keven's junior year, his normal energetic lifestyle suddenly changed. He was tired, fatigued, lacked energy and started losing weight. A thorough medical exam revealed devastating news, he was a victim of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Treatment started immediately and Keven remained positive that he would beat the disease. He returned to Murrieta Valley High School for his senior year and maintained a 3.47 G.P.A. He has become a positive role model for his peers, assuming the role as spokesperson for his school's blood drives and leadership workshops. Today, Keven's health is improving. He was recently accepted into the freshman class at Loyola Marymount University where he will major in Business Administration. Our best wishes to Keven and his family for much success in the future and for exemplifying the qualities of courage and determination -- this scholarship grant is most deserved.

SCMA RECOGNIZES FOUR 2008 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
For the fourth consecutive
year, the Southern California Marine Association has awarded $7,500 in
cash scholarships to help further the educational goals of outstanding
students of association members. SCMA scholarships are exclusively
for young adults under the age of 21 who are pursuing post-high
school higher education in colleges, universities, vocational-technical
and trade schools.
For 2008, four students have been chosen to receive
the cash scholarships. Those students include: Erika Carbajal,
$2,500.00; Kristen Mann, $2,500.00 Thomas Bossenger, $1,250.00; and
Yesenia Osoria, $1,250.00.
Student applicants are judged on their academic standing,
leadership, community involvement and writing/communication skills. Winners
are selected based on those applications and a committee of independent educators
meet to determine the eventual recipients. Additional information
regarding the SCMA Scholarship Fund and how to apply is available by logging
on to www.scma.com or contacting the SCMA office in Orange, California at (714)
